Tees Valley Combined Authority is part of the national Careers & Enterprise Company programme that is funded by the Department for Education.
What is the Careers & Enterprise Company?
The Careers & Enterprise Company has been set up with £20million of initial government funding to unlock the potential of young people aged 12-18 by strengthening links between schools, colleges, employers and careers & enterprise bodies. The Careers & Enterprise Company aims to expose young people to the world of work to inspire them to make more informed choices about their future.
There are many excellent examples of schools and colleges working well with employers and careers and enterprise programmes today. However the system overall does not yet work well enough:
Inconsistent coverage – In some parts of the country, schools and colleges are overwhelmed with offers from employers and other programmes and cannot make the best use of it. In other areas schools and colleges receive very few offers.
Not clear ‘what works’ best – It is not always clear what works best in terms of school or college interactions with employers and other careers and enterprise activities, limiting effectiveness.
Differences in how schools and employers operate – Schools, colleges and employers operate on different timelines with different language and working patterns.
The Careers & Enterprise Company approach is to be evidence-based, building on ‘what works’, and taking a pragmatic view of regional variations in the careers, enterprise and employment landscape, adapting our approach as required.
What is the Tees Valley Enterprise Adviser Network?
The purpose of a local Enterprise Adviser network is to create powerful, lasting connections between local businesses and the schools and colleges in the area.Enterprise Advisers are volunteers who will work directly with the leadership of individual schools and colleges. These volunteers, drawn from business and other employers, large and small, will help to develop effective employer engagement plans.Clusters of schools and colleges and Enterprise Advisers will be supported by a full time Enterprise Coordinator who will bring together the schools and employers in the cluster effectively.
